Why are data engineers building custom furniture (and how to stop)?

Organizations collect massive amounts of raw data every day—clicks, transactions, sensor readings, and more. This data has tremendous potential, but not in its raw form. Think of it like lumber and screws sitting in your garage: valuable materials, but you still need to build something useful. The challenge for data engineers is transforming this data into valuable products without duplicating effort across teams.

The problem emerges when different teams work in silos to solve similar data challenges. Finance pulls sales data and combines it with payment information for revenue tracking. Meanwhile, marketing grabs the same sales data and merges it with campaign attribution for conversion analysis. Each team builds custom solutions from scratch, creating what we call "custom furniture"—duplicated effort that could be avoided with better design.

This module explores how to break free from this cycle by applying four core transformation patterns: cleaning and validating data, standardizing formats across sources, enriching data with complete business context, and aggregating information for immediate insights. Rather than each team building custom solutions, these patterns help create reusable data products—the equivalent of IKEA furniture for data engineering.

The goal is establishing a single source of truth that eliminates conflicting reports, provides complete business context, offers standardized formats teams can immediately use, and delivers ready-to-consume insights. With modern tools like Apache Flink®, these transformations can happen in real-time as events flow through the system, enabling teams to share enriched, trustworthy data instead of rebuilding the same logic repeatedly.
